Blizzard Brings Bad Weather, Car Accidents to Chicago

After a relatively mild winter, Chicago experienced a late snow storm yesterday and into this morning which brought with it icy and snowy conditions, ensnarling the normal commutes that Chicago is known for. In fact, some of the southern suburbs and into northwest Indiana still had blizzard warnings this morning which have mostly expired. The total snowfall experienced varies dramatically depending on where you live but the outcome was the same – poor conditions led to a more difficult day for those in Chicago.

Reports related to the weather’s fallout are still coming in but at this time, numerous car accidents and other traffic collisions have been confirmed and some are believed to have caused injuries.

Often, car crashes that happen during winter storms are portrayed as if no one is to blame and that the collisions was beyond the control of the drivers involved. However, that is not often the case as negligence or a mistake behind the wheel generally combines with poor conditions to cause an accident and any resulting harm. The difference is significant because it may determine what rights victims have and whether relief in the form of compensation can be obtained by those who are hurt.

The laws that exist in Chicago enable victims who get hurt by the actions of others the ability to seek help, or relief, in a court of law. Victims must affirmatively take steps to bring a civil claim to preserve their right to get relied and must do so within a time period specified by law or their rights may be barred permanently, so if you have been injured, it is crucial to act within the statute of limitations.

Laws here reflect the fact that innocent victims of accidents should not be further harmed by being forced to bear the financial toll of their injuries. Instead, those who act irresponsibly or negligently should have to pay for these damages as they are the ones that caused the injuries and therefore they are the ones that should right the wrongs. A typical claim for relief may seek damages including past medical expenses, future medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and the permanency of any harm.

If this most recent storm left you involved in a winter weather car accident, you may have a valid claim for relief should you choose to act upon it.
